Voice With a Name
For Maria
merci omdat ik u heb gekend

The sun slipped in twin sheets
Of depthless sea and endless sky,
The last breath of a lover’s goodbye,
When I first heard you sigh
My name; your lilting voice,
Dulcet, dolce, dull throbs in my chest
To your lilting voice,
Calling to me, holding me, keeping me
In velvet folds of silk and honey, cresting
In waves of rolling cadence:
Goedenavond, let’s skip the tea,
And be off to bed, just you and me,
Cresting and rolling, bonne nuit.

And I, slipped in twin sheets with
One set of limbs,
Cried to your voice,
Your lilting, tilting voice with
No lips, no arms, no legs to bare,
No supple breasts or soft damp hair.

The moon hid in thin veils
Of drifting clouds and floating rain,
The silent nights, never the same,
When I gave in and gave you
Your name.
